The Ribble CGR AL e is great fun to ride with or without the assist switched on. The motor provides seamless and virtually silent assist from the small hub motor, and once you go beyond the speed limit (for the motor) you really don’t notice it.

It's nice to see a new display with some increased functionality – there are five levels of assist to choose from, and there is added Bluetooth functionality plus the USB charging port (as on the DP-C18).

The Aovo ES80 electric scooter is a decent budget option and is particularly suitable for lighter riders for short, flat commutes. It offers a decent specification for its price point, with an improved waterproofing as a good selling point, though the solid tyres may not provide the same level of comfort as pneumatic tyres.

The 2022 model of the Soy Rusher XF800 Flat Tire Electric bike is equipped with a Fang 750 watt 48 volt rehab motor, hydraulic brakes, front and rear suspension and a Shimano Tourney seven speed drivetrain. With a top speed of around 30 miles an hour and an impressive hill-climbing ability, the bike also offers five levels of assist.

These kits are generally reliable, more so than the more expensive Bafang mid-drive motors. If they do go wrong, everything is fairly cheap and easy to replace. You could even buy a second kit, so you had a backup of spare parts.

The Giant Sync Drive Pro motor is an absolute gem.
