The Marin Rift Zone E1 is a versatile e-MTB characterized by its solid construction, reliable Shimano motor system, and affordable pricing. The bike performs well on a wide range of trails, with a comfortable geometry and smooth suspension. However, slight limitations appear on longer, rougher descents due to heat buildup in the small air shock. Several components such as the Shimano MT400 brakes and pre-fitted CushCore inserts add value to the package, though improvements could be made on the dropper post and remote.

The Yakima Front Loader bike carrier has impressed with its unique design, robustness, and versatility. It securely holds any two-wheeler, regardless of the frame, and features an integrated cable lock to deter theft. Despite a non-aerodynamic appearance, noise disruption is minimal. However, it lacks a designer look.

The Marin Rift Zone E1 is a well-priced, all-round e-MTB that offers notable stability, comfort, and versatility, both in uphill climbs and downhill speed. A few of its features such as its size and the Shimano EP6 motor with a 630Wh battery suggest a great balance of comfort, climbing efficiency, and downhill performance. Reliable components such as Shimano MT400 brakes, CushCore inserts and sticky tyres provide great value for money. However, there is room for improvement in some components like the dropper post and the rear shock, which tends to heat up on longer descents.

The Liv Intrigue X E+ is a lightweight, high-performing electric mountain bike with great handling, but the motor lacks the refinement of competitors.

The 2022 Liv Embolden offers excellent trail performance with quality components at an affordable price, though it has minor drawbacks like narrow handlebars.

The 2023 Trek Fuel EX trail bike, redesigned with a sturdy frame, supportive suspension and adjustable geometry, provides an efficient and confident ride, despite being heavier and lacking small-bump suppleness. Its high-quality components, combined with efficient climbing performance, powerful brakes, and a short rear end for playful ride quality, make it a solid, worthwhile investment for aggressive riders.

The Specialized Levo e-MTB, now in its third iteration, delivers significant improvements in adjustable handling, suspension, and motor functionality. It excels in diverse terrains due to its grippy tires, powerful brakes, and agile handling. It outperforms Merida eOne-Sixty and Canyon Spectral:ON with its smoother motor performance and plushier suspension, although it has a higher price point.

The Trek Fuel EXe bike has a unique, smooth and quiet TQ-HPR50 motor along with a playful and agile character on the trail. The Trek Central app allows for motor performance tuning, ride tracking, navigation and more. Despite a wide Q-factor that may be uncomfortable for some, the new additions have further improved ride quality. The electric bike shows impressive agility and the subtle power from the TQ motor enhances the overall experience.

The Merida One-Sixty is a lightweight, innovative, and versatile enduro bike, with excellent components adding to its value and ride quality, despite minor issues with the dropper post and active suspension bobbing while sprinting. Features like modern build kit, progressive geometry, and wheelsize adaptability make it stand out. Fees well on a variety of trails, and offers great overall performance.

The saddle itself is very comfortable though, with its ramped tail offering a slip-free platform during seated climbing.

It’s clear why this motor is becoming popular with so many bike brands, given the flexibility it offers frame designers, particularly with the variety of battery options on offer.

The new 2022 Giant Reign E+ has just launched, and with its new motor, bigger battery, and shorter back end, it appears to have addressed all of our existing criticisms.

No doubt about it, the Orbea Rise is a superb handling bike.
