Bosch motors are the top-of-the-line choice for most e-bike manufacturers. The reliability and brand recognition that come with a name like Bosch make for an excellent marketing tactic. However, despite its undeniably top-notch manufacturing, errors are inevitable given the nature of e-bike use.
So, here’s your ultimate guide to the most common Bosch error codes—a huge shoutout to Bosch’s subreddit, where we sourced a majority of these errors.
With that being said, here is every Bosch error code that matters -
Control Unit & Display Errors -
410/ 418 - This common error code is displayed when one or more buttons on your control unit are stuck. Often occurring after a rough ride in gravel, dust, or mud, you can quickly resolve it by checking for and cleaning any dust, dirt, or debris from the buttons.
414 - This error code indicates a connection problem. Usually, this occurs when there is a loose connection between the wiring of the display and operating unit. Check the contacts and wiring.
422 - Also indicative of a connection problem, this error code indicates that the drive unit is disconnected from the rest of the bike, or, most commonly, from the display.
423 - This error code signifies a battery pack connection problem. Try removing and reinserting the battery pack. If it still doesn’t work, clean the battery terminals/connection points before you reinsert it.
431 - This is a software version mismatch. Usually an easy fix; try restarting the entire system. If it doesn’t work, you’ll have to try a firmware update. Sometimes that can be done in-app; other times you’ll have to take it to a dealer or service center.
Drive Unit & Motor Errors -
500 - Internal motor failure. This error means that the motor is refusing to turn on or turn the wheels. Try restarting the bike, and if it doesn’t work, take it in for servicing.
503 - This is a speed sensor malfunction. It is often caused by a shifted spoke magnet or a damaged sensor cable. Usually, these parts need professional intervention to fix.
504 - Manipulation of the speed signal sensor is detected. If you have any unauthorized modifications, remove them. If not, check with the service center for magnet realignment.
540 - This is a temperature error. Your bike is either too hot or too cold. Ensure your bike stays within the required 10-80 degrees Celsius range.
580 - This error code signifies a software error. Usually indicative of an outdated software version, you can fix it by updating the software in-app.
591 - This is a transmission authentication error. It usually means that the control unit and motor could not identify the transmission. It also means that the motor is next to unusable. Try restarting the entire bike, and remove and reattach the battery. If it still doesn’t work, take it to the service center.
Battery, Charger & Wheel Errors -
606 - This is an external battery error. Check that the battery wiring is well connected. Then restart the system.
610 - Indicative of a battery voltage error, this is usually not something you can repair. Take the bike to a service center immediately. Crucially, do not try to charge the system or turn it on repeatedly.
620 - This is a battery charger error. Unplug and inspect the charger. If it persists, you may need to replace the battery charging cable.
640 - This is an internal battery fault error. Restart the system, and consider taking it in for servicing.
All 7xx-series errors occur only in Bosch automatic gear systems and pertain to third-party components. Most of which are not compatible with Bosch systems. Try taking them off. If the issue persists, you may need to have it professionally serviced.
810 - This is a fault where signals from front wheel speed sensors are faulty. It needs Bosch-certified servicing.
830/ 831/ 833/ 835 - Sensors at either rear wheel, front wheel, rear or front discs are missing, dislodged, or unable to deliver information to the bike’s control unit. Restart the system and ride for at least 2 minutes. If the ABS light stays on, take it to your closest dealership.
840 & 850 - These are internal ABS faults. Take them in for servicing immediately.
